Two islands, one short crossing apart
Cebu and Bohol sit an easy fastcraft ride from each other, and together they cover an unusual amount of ground: the founding chapter of Philippine history on one island, and on the other a landscape that looks invented.
Cebu City is where the story starts — Magellan's Cross, the Basilica del Santo Niño built around the country's oldest religious icon, and Fort San Pedro on the old harbour. Above the city, Sirao's flower gardens and the ridge roads give you the whole coastline in one view, while Lapu-Lapu City on Mactan marks the 1521 battle that turned the Spanish back.
Across the water, Bohol delivers the Chocolate Hills — more than a thousand limestone mounds that brown off in the dry season — the tarsiers of the Corella sanctuary, and a lunch cruise down the Loboc River. It is a full day, and a memorable one.
