Meet the gentle giants of Donsol

Each season, plankton-rich waters draw butanding — whale sharks — to the coast of Donsol, Sorsogon. Snorkelling alongside these gentle, bus-sized giants is a humbling encounter, and Donsol pioneered the community-led, interaction-officer model that keeps it ethical for both visitors and animals.

What sets Donsol apart is how it is done. The sharks here are wild and unfed — they come for the plankton, on their own schedule — and every boat carries a trained Butanding Interaction Officer who enforces the rules the town wrote with WWF-Philippines back in the late 1990s: snorkel only, no touching, no chasing, limited swimmers in the water at a time. It is one of the reasons Donsol's model is cited internationally as responsible wildlife tourism done right.

It also means nothing is guaranteed, and we would rather say so plainly: some mornings bring several encounters, some bring none. Either way we handle the land transfer from Naga City or Legazpi, your registration at the Donsol Tourism Centre, and your boat and BIO — and if the sea is quiet, the firefly cruise on the Ogod River at dusk is a remarkable consolation.

When to go

The whale shark season in Donsol generally runs November to June, peaking around February to May. Outside these months sightings drop sharply.

• Never touch, ride, or block a whale shark
• Keep the required distance and follow your BIO at all times
• No flash photography; reef-safe sunscreen only
• Maximum swimmers per shark is regulated — for the animals' wellbeing
