Rice terraces, hanging coffins & colonial streets

The north is the Philippines' cool, cultural heartland. The Ifugao rice terraces — carved by hand into the Cordillera and farmed by the same families for centuries — give way to Sagada's pine ridges and hanging coffins, then drop to the cobbled, lantern-lit streets of heritage Vigan.

Two UNESCO World Heritage Sites anchor the route. The Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras were inscribed in 1995 — it is the clusters at Batad, Bangaan, Mayoyao, Hungduan and Nagacadan that carry the listing, and Batad's amphitheatre of stone-walled terraces is the one worth the walk in. Vigan followed in 1999: Calle Crisologo and the streets around it hold the best-preserved Spanish colonial town in Asia, still lived in rather than staged.

In between sits Sagada, where coffins hang from the limestone cliffs of Echo Valley in a burial practice the Igorot have kept for generations, and Sumaguing Cave runs deep and cold beneath it.

It's a road journey best done with a driver who knows the mountain passes and a guide who can read the landscape — both of which we handle, along with your stays and the local trek and cave guides.

When to go

November to February is cool and dry with clear mountain skies; the terraces are greenest around June–July before harvest. Nights in Sagada are cold — pack layers.
