The surfing capital — and so much more

Teardrop-shaped Siargao made its name on Cloud 9, one of the world's great right-hand reef breaks — but the island rewards everyone. Palm-lined roads lead to glassy lagoons, tidal rock pools, and a trio of postcard islets just offshore.

Cloud 9 breaks over shallow reef off General Luna, with a boardwalk and viewing tower built out over the water — you can watch a serious swell from dry land, which in the peak months of roughly August to November is a spectacle in itself. Beginner breaks sit further along the coast, and the island has no shortage of instructors.

Inland and offshore, Siargao is quieter than its reputation. Sugba Lagoon at Del Carmen is flat jade water ringed by mangrove — the town holds one of the largest mangrove forests in the country. The Magpupungko rock pools at Pilar only appear at low tide, so the visit is set by the tide table, not the clock. And Naked, Daku and Guyam make a straightforward, lovely day of island hopping.

When to go
